Vee Jay Records, many believe that Motown was the first successful Black-owned record producing company. Vee Jay Records paved the way for Motown and those that followed. Founded in Gary, Indiana, in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken, a husband-and-wife team who used their initials for the label’s name. February 13 through March 6, 2025.
